Trekking or camel treks
Everything you need to know before you go…
Are you considering a trip to a country that you may not know and perhaps in conditions that are completely new to you…
You have a lot of questions…
The climate
The south of Tunisia is in an arid zone… This means that it very rarely rains, but it can still happen!
- In summer from mid-June to mid-September it is very hot, often very very hot! You can only go to the desert in the evening, to spend a night, impossible to do an excursion of several days with the camels, however excursions in 4×4 are possible, providing a moment of rest in a preferred area air-conditioned during the hottest hours of the day.
- In autumn, from mid-September, the temperature decreases. You can then go into the desert with the camels or in a 4×4. The nights are often mild and the sky is magnificent. It is a very good season for the Sahara, there is generally little wind, but some years, rarely, it can rain in violent and brief storms. Check maid service katy tx. There may then be wadis which cut off certain roads for a few hours or a few days…
- In winter, from mid-November to mid-February, the days are beautiful and mild, very pleasant for walking, but the nights are cold, you must bring warm clothes for the evening and very good backpacks. sleeping accommodation for bivouacs…
- In spring, the days get longer and the nights get milder, it’s a beautiful time for the desert but it’s also the time of the big winds… an experience to live!
The currency
The Tunisian currency is the Dinar (DT or TND).
You cannot buy it outside Tunisia. So you have to change money when you arrive.
You can change money at the airport, in hotels and in banks. Banks are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
We are not allowed to re-export dinars, so you must change them before leaving, for this you will need your exchange slip… don’t throw it away.
A dinar is divided into 1000 millimes
One euro is currently worth 3.1 dinars
You can get dinars with your international credit card, either from ATMs (there are more and more of them but be careful… they are sometimes empty, especially on weekends), or in banks
You can rarely use the Credit Card for purchases or even small restaurants. Often an additional cost of 5% is requested for payment by card because the charges for merchants are very high for the use of credit cards
On the other hand, euros are accepted almost everywhere.
Airport/Airport Packages
These are “all-inclusive” packages, full board, excluding flights.
There are packages for camel treks, for stays in fixed camps and for tours with our 4×4.
- You give us your flight schedules, we will take care of you as soon as you land and we will accompany you until your departure.
- The package includes all services: transfer, entire stay with full board
- You will only have to pay for your drinks (other than water in the desert), any visits not specified in the package, and tips.
Food
Food in bivouac
It is probably during bivouacs in the desert that you will discover the most authentic flavors.
- In the desert your Tunisian guides will prepare traditional meals cooked over a wood fire.
- Couscous, of course, but also “margas”, meat or vegetable stews that are eaten with bread, “chorba”, barley semolina soup which is traditionally eaten during Ramadan at the end of the fast, pasta with spicy Tunisian sauce, sometimes also “coucha”, meat stewed with vegetables and spices…
- In addition you will have salads, seasonal fruits (dates, and pomegranates from October, then oranges and clementines, apples and pears), in Tunisia we import little fruit, we taste seasonal fruits picked when ripe.
- And then there is the flatbread cooked in the sand that you will enjoy every morning for breakfast and with soups and salads, a treat.
- For breakfast, tea and coffee, pancakes, biscuits, cheese, jam and… olive oil for those who want to make the traditional breakfast
Enough to gain strength for the day! - During camel treks and camel treks we also take breaks with biscuits, cheese, dates…
For all excursions in the desert we provide you with unlimited bottled mineral water
restaurants
In Tunisia there are different types of restaurants:
- “tourist” restaurants which have an alcohol license. They generally serve Tunisian dishes which you can accompany with wine. The dishes are spicy “European style”, that is to say a little less than for the locals, but it’s still not bland!
- “Arab” restaurants where alcohol is not served. Among these, in tourist towns, there are some that are more aimed at tourists, more care for cleanliness and decor, acceptable toilets…
It is in this type of restaurant that we most often take you to at lunchtime. - Hotel restaurants: they generally serve “international” cuisine in buffet style. Click here. almost all 3* and above hotels and in some unclassified hotels there is alcohol, there are bars and wine at the table. We offer hotels with alcohol licenses with some exceptions.
How to get to us?
by plane
The closest airport to Douz is Tozeur, but unfortunately it is quite poorly served…
The easiest way is to arrive in Djerba. There are direct flights from most European airports. However, if you cannot find a direct flight you can go via Tunis then domestic flights.
scheduled international flights:
“Dry” flights are unfortunately often quite expensive and quickly full during school holiday periods.
by boat
If you come with your 4×4 or your motorbike you can come by boat from Marseille (SNCM or CTN) or Genoa (CTN). There are also several Italian companies. You will arrive in Tunis La Goulette, then you can come to the south by road, the highway goes to Gabès.
travel in Tunisia
- Rent a car:
there are rental agencies everywhere… you can find different classes of cars there at “European” prices
- The “praises”
These are collective taxis which connect all the small and large towns in Tunisia. You go to the rental station and find the taxi to your destination… When it is full it leaves. Practical and economical
- Buses
There are buses between all major cities and medium-sized towns. In particular from Tunis there are day and night buses every day to go to the south. They are modern and air-conditioned. You find them at the bus station. Be careful… they are sometimes stormed by students on weekends and school holidays…
- Trains: SNCFT</li >
From Tunis to Gabès and to Tozeur. Few in number but inexpensive and relatively comfortable in 1st class. Bus connections exist to go further south
Tips
Tipping remains the rule in Tunisia. As everywhere, they are at the discretion of the customer. As an indication, we tip around 15 to 20 dinars for a day of work (drivers, camel drivers). around 2 dinars for one-off services (like the hotel porter)
